The most popular sport in Canada is “Ice hockey”. It is loved by many Canadian people as the national sport of Canada.

The second popular sport is “Basketball” or “Baseball”. These are also popular sports in Canada.

②    Japan

The most popular sport in Japan is “baseball” or “soccer.” These sports have taken the first or second place for a long time.

③    Why are “Basketball” and “Baseball” popular in Canada?
“National sports is very popular in the country”. So, that “Ice hockey” is very popular in Canada is natural. On the other hand, “Basketball” and “Baseball” aren’t “National sports” in Canada. But these sports are very popular in the United States. So, I think sports culture of Canada is influenced by the United States.

④    What is important to become popular sports in Japan?
I think a star player or a good result in a big tournament like “Olympic Games” is important to become popular sports in Japan because it is possible for a lot of people to know about the sports by being reported a lot.

For example, there is rarely reports about “Japanese women's football team” until the team won “FIFA Women's World Cup” in 2011. After that, the Japanese women’s soccer game is often a live broadcast on TV even friendly match.

And tennis is also. Kei Nishikori took second place at US Open in 2014. After that, his result is reported even not so big tournament.
